Convert Post From WordPress to Blogger

Google-blog-converters-appengine is a converter to/from various blog formats like wordpress2blogger, blogger2wordpress and etc.

Let’s take an example, says we are going to convert blog post from wordpress to blogger with google-blog-convertes-appengine.

Steps:

1. Download google-blog-converters-appengine from http://google-blog-converters-appengine.googlecode.com/files/google-blog-converters-1.0-r64.tar.gz

2. Extract the file

3. Download XML export file from wordpress

4. Open Terminal and go into “google-blog-converters-1.0-r64/bin”. Assume the file located at Desktop

cd ~/Desktop/google-blog-converters-1.0-r64/bin

5. Type below command in Terminal

./wordpress2blogger.sh ~/Desktop/wordpress..xml | tee result.xml

6. Done. You can now import result.xml to blogger host service.

Troubleshooting

If you find any errors when execute “./wordpress2blogger.sh ~/Desktop/wordpress..xml | tee result.xml”.

Might be caused by the XML syntax errors. Check the error message.

Check the line number highlighted with red color.

The correct syntax for this should be:

MySQL Gone Away Error

This week me and my readers are having difficult time to access my blog, it took forever to load the page and it gives error message, saying “error: [MySQL server has gone away]“.

This error means either the database has been down or the connection to database has been terminated. After some investigation, I found that the database are still live, so the conclusion is the connection between wordpress to mysql had issue.

So, I started to find the root cause behind this, I went through the Mysql variables and saw the “wait_timeout” are set to 100 sec. It just too short to cater some large queries and when the CPU is heavily loaded, connection to Mysql will reach it bottleneck and fails. Some of you may wonder what is “wait_timeout” variable?

wait-timeout is the number of seconds the server waits for activity on a non-interactive connection before closing it. This timeout applies only to TCP/IP and Unix socket file connections, not to connections made via named pipes, or shared memory.

I reported this issue immediately to the web hosting provider and within 24 hours, they alter the “wait_timeout” variables to 500 sec.

Problem solved.

Customize Popblue 3 Column

I’ve customized the theme based on my own preferences. Basically, I only modified 3 files, which is style.css, single.php, index.php.

So what is the differences between default and customize popblue 3 column theme?

Changelog:

- maximum width of popblue 3 theme, wider screens

- Post title:

link, remove underline

bigger font size

added author and postview (required wp-postview plugin)

- Post display

Display the latest post on Top

List older post with short description at bottom of the page. (The ideal is base on “Blog oh Blog V2.0 theme”)

- Page navigation

Required wp-pagenavi plugin

- blockquote

To compare the theme,

Default: Test Run

Modified: My Blog

Few days back I received a comment from a friend, saying my blog are a bit messy and untidy. All the while I thought my blog are simple and clean, I didn’t expect getting this kind of feedback, anyway I accept criticism. Any constructive comment I’m also willing to listen.

Therefore, I decided to look for a new theme and after browsing to a few wordpress theme websites, at the end I still want to stick back with my belove popblue. I don’t know why, I just love it. So, I decided to enhance abit by changing the theme to popblue 3 column and modify it.

Customize Popblue Theme blockquote

Popblue, one of my favorate wordpress theme. If you like theme that looks simple and light weight, Popblue should be the one that you are looking for. The only drawback of this theme is it has a simple blockquote.
In order to make it look more interesting, by applying following changes can make the blockquote look nicer.

Steps:
1) First, download the theme from http://www.blogohblog.com/wordpress-theme-pop-blue/ or from the direct link show at below:

The following is optional:

For regular index http://www.blogohblog.com/request/popblueindex.zip

For regular header without logo http://www.blogohblog.com/request/headerstyle.zip download the items and replace it all.

2) Extract the downloaded file and place it inside “/wordpress/wp-content/themes” folder

3) Goto the extracted folder, “pop-blue”, look for style.css

4) Paste the following code at the bottom of style.css

blockquote {
border-top: 1px solid #006699;
border-bottom: 1px solid #006699;
border-left: 1px solid #006699;
border-right: 1px solid #006699;
margin-left: 1.5em;
padding-left: 5px;
background-color: #e7f9ff;
font-family: Arial;
}

5) That’s it.
